Panthays

Panthays
Chinese Muslims from Yunnan Province, who migrated in large numbers to the Burma-China border region following the suppression by the Chinese government of a Muslim rebellion between 1856 and 1873. Many settled in the Wa district and Keng Tung in Shan State, but lacking land of their own, they made their living as mule drivers, leading caravans back and forth across the Burma-China border and as far south as Rangoon (Yangon). In Mandalay and other towns, the Panthays have built mosques to serve their own community. Some observers believe the Panthays are descended from Arab or Central Asian Muslims who were brought to Yunnan by Khubilai Khan in the 13th century and intermarried with local women but kept their Islamic faith.
